XX Congress of Sociedad Española de Retina y Vítreo

Drs. Carlos Mendez Mendez Vazquez and Pablo Carnota attended over the last 3, 4 and 5 of March to the XX Congress of the Spanish Society of Retina and Vitreous held in the Auditorio Alfredo Kraus of Las Palmas. During this congress an overview of the latest developments in the treatment of diseases of the retina, both medically and surgically was given.
Regarding the diagnostic methods based on the latest developments in OCT technology, several speakers referred to the use of OCT-angiography to study vascular retinal problems (such as diabetic retinopathy or wet macular degeneration -AMD- ). The aim of this technique is to study of the circulation of the retina and choroid without the use of contrast (fluorescein angiography), so far the only method for the diagnosis of such vascular diseases.
Also related to vascular diseases, anti-angiogenic drugs and treatment regimens were the main topics discussed during the conference. In addition to existing drugs (which are administered by intraocular injection) there are new ones in various stages of development with more effective active principles and longer duration than those currently available. This will allow patients fewer controls and fewer injections to maintain or, in some cases, improve vision.
During the congress there was a session dedicated to complicated surgical cases and several papers related to retina surgery, especially in micro-incision surgery with instruments increasingly smaller and more efficient. There was also a briefing on cases of toxicity by perfluorocarbon, liquid produced in several patients with retinal detachment.
